This national strategy seeks to redress the problems for women who are in or are seeking to enter the workforce. They include: unemployment rates which are higher than for men; lack of access to child care; inability to gain full time employment; being confined to a narrow range of occupations such as teachers, nurses, clerks, salespersons and personal service providers; under-representation of girls in maths, science and technology in schools; a higher proportion of men in science, technology, commerce, medicine and law in universities; and lower numbers of women entering into apprenticeships than men. It has been found that men are less likely to be employed in positions that have low status and are poorly paid; and that they are more able to access training through recognised trainer providers. Aboriginal women, women from non-English speaking backgrounds and women with disabilities are more disadvantaged. The strategy outlines eight national goals and they are: (1) improving women's access to employment, education and training; (2) improving conditions of employment for workers who have families; (3) improving work and training opportunities for women as integral to industry planning and restructuring; (4) reducing gender differences in TAFE and higher education courses; (5) empowering women to contribute to decision-making forums in employment, education and training; (6) improving women's occupational health and safety; (7) supporting equal pay; and (8) developing special awards and conditions for those women who are particularly disadvantaged in society. Progress in relation to the goals is to be monitored on an annual basis by the DOLAC (Department of Labour Advisory Committee). This is the second annual report produced by the Women's Bureau, DEET, on behalf of the DOLAC Working Party. The Australian women's employment strategy is indexed at TD/IRD 87.11. Show less

The study documents the functions involved in being a community services worker in the area of home care, as well as the range of variables which impact on the work. The purpose of this study was to ensure that the skills identified would be evaluated and accredited in the award restructuring process to enable the community services workers to be graded correctly under the new award.
The restructuring of the local government award is, however, only a first step towards obtaining employment equity for community services workers. The fundamental issue still to be addressed and challenged is the traditional perception of the nature and value of women's work.

This publication addresses the need for more equitable employment practices in the printing industry and proposes strategies for bringing these about. The study looks at gender stereotyping and different interpretations of aptitude by employers which limit womens' access to apprenticeship training and employment in non-traditional trades in the printing industry. It includes a survey and interviews of employers in small, medium and large printing firms. The results provide insights into why discrimination occurs and indicates priorities for change. Management and recruitment practices, and organisational culture were identified as significant issues preventing women's participation in the industry. The project was funded under the Women's Research and Employment Initiatives Program (WREIP). Show less
